NAT Gateway
NAT Gateway is a network component that acts as a translator between private and public networks. It allows resources within a private network, such as a virtual private cloud (VPC), to access the internet without exposing those resources to direct external connections.
How Does it Work?
- Private Network: Instances or services within a private network typically have private IP addresses. These addresses are not directly accessible from the public internet.
- NAT Gateway: The NAT gateway is located in a public subnet and has a public IP address. It acts as a proxy for devices in the private network.
- Translation: When a device in the private network attempts to access the internet, its traffic is routed to the NAT gateway. The NAT gateway translates the private IP address of the device to its own public IP address. This allows the traffic to reach the internet.
- Return Traffic: When a response is received from the internet, the NAT gateway translates the public IP address back to the original private IP address, ensuring that the response reaches the correct device.
