AWS EventBridge

AWS EventBridge is a serverless event bus service provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that enables you to connect applications, services, and data sources using events. It simplifies the process of building event-driven architectures by allowing you to route events from various sources to designated targets based on rules.

Key Features of AWS EventBridge:

  1. Event Bus: Acts as a central hub that receives and routes events. You can use the default event bus for AWS services, custom event buses for your own applications, or partner event buses for third-party integrations.

  2. Event Sources:
    • AWS Services: Events can originate from over 100 AWS services, such as EC2, S3, Lambda, or CloudWatch.
    • Custom Applications: You can send custom events from your own applications.
    • SaaS Partners: Events from third-party services like Datadog, PagerDuty, or Shopify can be integrated.
    • Schema Registry: EventBridge supports a schema registry to define and manage event structures, making it easier to work with event data.
  3. Rules and Filtering: You define rules to match events based on patterns (e.g., specific fields or values) and route them to targets. This allows fine-grained control over which events trigger specific actions.

  4. Targets: Events can be sent to various AWS services as targets, such as AWS Lambda, SNS, SQS, Step Functions, or ECS, enabling flexible workflows.

  5. Event Transformation: EventBridge allows you to transform event data before it reaches the target, such as modifying payloads or extracting specific fields.

  6. Reliability and Scalability: As a serverless service, EventBridge automatically scales to handle high event volumes and ensures reliable delivery with features like dead-letter queues for failed events.

  7. Cross-Account and Cross-Region Support: You can route events across different AWS accounts or regions, enabling complex, distributed architectures.

Common Use Cases:

Example:

Suppose you have an S3 bucket where files are uploaded. You can configure EventBridge to detect “Object Created” events from S3 and trigger a Lambda function to process the file, such as converting an image or extracting metadata.
