Why Use React.js Instead of Pure HTML & JavaScript?

Building web interfaces with plain HTML and JavaScript works well for small, mostly static pages. But as an application grows in size and interactivity, managing the UI by hand becomes error-prone and hard to maintain. React.js was created to solve these exact problems. Below we explore the main reasons developers choose React over pure HTML and JavaScript.

The Problem with Pure HTML & JavaScript

When you build a dynamic UI with vanilla JavaScript, you typically:

For a small page this is fine. But as features grow, you end up with scattered DOM manipulation code, duplicated markup, and subtle bugs where the screen no longer matches the underlying data. This is often called “spaghetti code,” and it becomes increasingly difficult to reason about.

Notice that you are responsible for both changing the data and updating the DOM. In a real app with dozens of interdependent values, keeping every DOM node in sync manually quickly becomes overwhelming.

How React Solves These Problems

1. Declarative UI

With React, you describe what the UI should look like for a given state, and React figures out how to update the DOM. You no longer write step-by-step DOM manipulation instructions.

When count changes, React automatically re-renders the component and updates only the parts of the DOM that changed. You never touch the DOM directly.

React lets you break the UI into small, self-contained components. Each component manages its own markup, logic, and styling, and can be reused throughout the app. In pure HTML you would copy and paste markup, then keep every copy in sync manually. With React, you fix or improve a component in one place and every usage benefits.

3. Automatic State-to-UI Synchronization

React’s core idea is that the UI is a function of state: UI = f(state). When the state updates, the view updates automatically. This eliminates an entire class of bugs where the screen and the data drift out of sync.

4. The Virtual DOM for Performance

Directly manipulating the real DOM is relatively slow, and doing it inefficiently can hurt performance. React uses a Virtual DOM — an in-memory representation of the UI. When state changes, React compares the new virtual DOM with the previous one (a process called “diffing”) and updates only the minimal set of real DOM nodes that actually changed.

Data in React flows in a single direction, from parent components down to children through props. This makes it much easier to trace where data comes from and to debug why the UI looks the way it does, especially in large applications.

React has a massive ecosystem: routing (React Router), state management (Redux, Zustand), data fetching (React Query, RTK Query), UI component libraries, testing tools, and more. With pure HTML and JavaScript you would build or wire up all of these yourself.

When Pure HTML & JavaScript Is Still Fine

React is not always necessary. For very simple, mostly static sites — a landing page, a blog, or a small brochure site — plain HTML, CSS, and a little JavaScript may be the better, lighter-weight choice. React adds a build step and a learning curve, so it shines most when your app is interactive, data-driven, and growing in complexity.
