Blue-Green Deployment

Blue-Green Deployment is a release strategy that reduces downtime and risk by running two identical production environments, called Blue and Green. At any given time, only one environment serves live production traffic while the other stays idle or hosts the next version. When a new release is ready, traffic is switched from the old environment to the new one, giving users a seamless transition and an instant path back if something goes wrong.

How It Works

  1. Blue is live: The current version of the application runs in the Blue environment and serves all production traffic.
  2. Deploy to Green: The new version is deployed to the Green environment, which is an exact replica of Blue in terms of infrastructure and configuration.
  3. Test Green: The Green environment is validated with smoke tests, health checks, and internal traffic while it remains isolated from real users.
  4. Switch traffic: Once Green is verified, the router or load balancer redirects all incoming traffic from Blue to Green. Green becomes live.
  5. Keep Blue on standby: Blue is kept intact for a period of time so you can roll back instantly if problems appear.
  6. Repeat: On the next release, the roles reverse. Blue becomes the target for the new version, and Green is the current live environment.
