What Are Build Tools?

Build tools are programs that take your source code — JSX, TypeScript, modern JavaScript, CSS, images, and other assets — and transform it into optimized files that browsers can efficiently load and run. Browsers don’t understand JSX or the newest JavaScript syntax directly, and shipping dozens of unbundled files hurts performance. Build tools bridge that gap.

In a modern React project, the build tool is what powers your npm run dev and npm run build commands. It handles compilation, bundling, optimization, and a fast development experience.

Why Build Tools Matter

Core Concepts

Bundling

Bundling merges your application’s modules and their dependencies into optimized chunks. It resolves the dependency graph starting from an entry point and produces output the browser can load.

Transpilation
